How Ferris suspension actually works

Ferris was the first manufacturer to build suspension into a mower, and it is still the only real reason to choose one.

What it is

Automotive-style coil-over shocks and control arms front and rear, so the machine's wheels move over the ground instead of the whole machine — and the operator — moving with it. Ferris first patented the system with Todd Gordon, who went on to be a winning NASCAR crew chief. That is not a marketing story; it is where the geometry came from.

What it changes for the cut

A deck that stays level cuts level. On rough or rolling ground an unsuspended machine transmits every dip into the deck, and you can read the result in the stripe. This is why Ferris talks about a quality cut faster — the speed is only worth having if the cut survives it.
